Those Electronic Boys from Bergen

I've talked about CasioKids before here on Outside Everything, well early next month, October 11th to be exact, Casiokids release their second album entitled Aabenbaringen over aaskammen ("The Revelation over the mountain") via the US label Polyvinyl.  The first single called "Det Haster" (Urgency)  is a return to the synthpop style Casiokids is known for. The track is a pulsing ambient tune that I imagine was inspired by being the drunkest one at a packed house party and desperately trying to find the exit, its a swaying, in your own head, mumbled voices, slow motion experience. If Aabenbaringen over aaskammen anything like  Topp Stemning På Lokal Bar, then I'm sure it will be on repeat all of October.

Last night I watched this Vice Media documentary called The Wodka Wars, its a really interesting immersion journalism view on the origins of Vodka and who has the right to call it their own. Be sure to watch their other documentaries, really great stuff.

I have nothing clever or descriptive to write here.

This song came out towards the end of June but I missed it like most things. So I bring it to you now, I have a feeling that, and this may be too early, this will be and I hate saying this "The Paper Planes" of 2011, damn I sound like a tool. Well, the song is catchy as hell and I'm still trying to figure out who Kreayshawn reminds me of. Until then I'll keep this on repeat.

Let's Bring Back Soul

Aloe Blacc is an American soul singer, rapper, and musician. He has received a lot of attention, especially in Europe for some reason, for his single "I Need A Dollar". Personally I wish this type of music and style were more prevalent in popular modern music, but hey I'm a sucker for nostalgia. The video for "Loving You Is Killing Me" is so damn feel good and smooth its ridiculous. Check it out.

Thought You Should Know.

Snø is a band from Bergen. I had the chance to see them awhile ago but missed out due to a breakdown in communication. They've just added music to to their Myspace. To me its reminiscent of Björk mixed with Godspeed! You Black Emperor. Check it out, they're someone to watch.

EkstremsportVeko: Big Bang

While working in Voss for the Extreme Sports Week I had the privilege of seeing one of Norway's most popular  bands Big Bang, how they've escaped my radar over these past few years is beyond me. Formed in 1992 by frontman Øystein Greni, Big Bang has been called the best live band in Norwegian music, and they definitely proved that. If it wasn't for their typical Norwegian look, I could picture the trio growing up in Memphis, Tennessee. One part Bad Company, one part The Raconteurs with echoes of John Fogerty, this trio proved what a modern rock concert should be,sing alongs, sex appeal, and lighters swaying in the air.

Call me the Blasphemer

I had the chance to see Bob Dylan in concert here in Bergen last Wednesday. To go to a Bob Dylan concert and say he wasn't very good must be blasphemy but that is how I feel about it. I've always heard he is much different in concert, opposed to how he sounds on his old albums, of course we have to understand that he's been in the business for quite a long time so naturally, an artist will get tired of playing the same songs over and over, especially in the same way. Other than that he sounded like Tom Waits doing an impression of Bob Dylan. I've come to the conclusion that Bob Dylan has passed on, but we're blessed with his brother Robert Zimmerman covering his songs. I leave you with this. 

 

Yelawolf European Tour: Live in Bergen

One thing I love about music is that it transcends language, culture, place, status, etc. and that was evident on the 25th of July at Garage, in Bergen, Norway. A packed out basement venue, gritty, small stage, rock ceiling, traditionally home to punk rock and heavy metal, among others in the alternative music genre, this would seem like an unfitting place for a rapper from Gadsden, Alabama but it might as well have been home away from home. The small stage consisted of Yelawolf, his DJ and two bodyguards who stood against the back wall, which is a relief from the stereotypical rap show usually consisting of the artist and half his extended family, all on stage and all with plugged in microphones. From the moment he ran up on stage he was in command, it was a blitz of song after song, the crowd responded so well, a room full of blonde Scandinavians singing along to all most every word, having no idea what the hell a box chevy was, let alone what popping the trunk on someone may be. 

 After the show I was lucky enough to join Yelawolf and crew backstage. They were amazed that a fellow Alabamian was in of all places Bergen, Norway. We talked about missing home, his first time overseas, the European perception of his music, Yela says he was very happy with the welcome he got in England and Barcelona, he could tell there were a lot of new fans but the reaction he got was incredible. He recounted a story of being in the Bergen Fisketorget, a very tourist part of town, buying souvenirs, once they found out he was a rapper the peddlers began practically throwing stuff at him, he ended up walking out paying 22,000NOK or about 4000US. I've never really met any other rappers, but if I do I hope they're all as nice as Yelawolf, he's probably the most down to earth musician I've ever met. 

Reporting Live from EktremsportVeko 2011!

All this week I will be blogging and reporting from the Extreme Sports Week Festival here in Voss,Norway. 

The festival which is in its eleventh year is home to base jumping, skydiving, paragliding, rafting, kayaking, climbing and moutain biking. What Ekstremsportveko also has going for it is that it is also a small music festival. The music side of the festival showcases Norwegian and Foreign bands from all over, featuring many up and coming artist as well as established veterans of the scene. Stay tuned for reviews of Bergen all girl ska pop band Razika, Big Bang, and anything else I see or get into. Also coming, my complete review of the Yelawolf show, as well as my recounting of my half ass "interview".

Outside Fences

While most of you are nursing your Bonnaroo hangovers, I've benn determined to not let my night end up like my day, inside with limited human contact, so I ventured downtown. After checking my local haunts for familiar faces I decided to explore lesser known parts of town. On my walk I began to hear music, a loud repetitive thud that vibrated down the street, muffled vocals of unrecognizable words, and a shrill sound reminiscent of guitars. So naturally I headed in that direction. What I found was Judas Priest, nestled next to Edvard Grieg Plass with a beautiful view of Ulriken lurking in the background. I arrived at the end of an unfamiliar song, which happened to be the end of their set, but in stereotypical fashion it was only the beginning of a 30 minute encore. After a minute and a blast from the smoke machine, Rob Halford and the gang returned with "Hell Bent for Leather" . After that it was decided, my spot for the remainder of the show would be right across the street with a perfect view of the stage, sharing the company of others with the same idea and a homeless man who was setting shit on fire in a small aluminum grill.

Halford was dressed in his trademark biker hat and a jacket made of tinfoil that went down to his knees, the homeless man, to be expected, was extremely unshaven, wearing an assortment of clothes waving a cucumber and an eggplant around in the air. Some may give Judas Priest shit for continuing their careers after almost forty years, but to be reliving the best years of your life, on your own terms, that's happiness. After Hell Bent.. the gang left the stage again, then Rob Halford returns for a call and answer session of Woooah wooooahs and Yeahhhh Yeahhh yayyyyys only to transition into a 10 minute rendition of Another Thing Comin' accompanied by a recorder solo from the faithful homeless man, who had begun to grill his produce. To finally wrap things up, the homeless man, nay prophet, began to profess "Revolution is now, you stopped the wrong war! Revolution! End the World War!" as "Living After Midnight"  began and the crowd started to dissipate.

TL:DR Metal never dies in Bergen featuring the Prophet.

The 6th Album is the Self Titled album.

Sondre Lerche has released his 6th studio album entitled Sondre Lerche, which is in stores today! The Bergen local is known for his variety and range of musical sound and inspiration in his music. He is probably most known in the States for composing the soundtrack to the Steve Carrell film Dan In Real Life. If you haven't heard of him yet definitely check out his back catalog, I'm not a huge fan but Phantom Punch is really a terrific album. Here is the video for "Private Caller" which is the single from the new album, enjoy. cheers.

Planking

I recently heard about a youth phenomenon called Planking which started in Austrailia a few years ago, its apparently gotten pretty popular here in Norway, check it out HERE . The point is to be as creative or dangerous, in some cases, as possible. Tyler, The Creator "She"

Alright, I know I won't shut the fuck up about OFWGKTA but this should be the last one for awhile. Tyler released his video for "She" from his latest album Goblin a few days ago. When I first heard this song on the album I wasn't much of a fan of it but after watching the video on repeat its really grown on me. I think the video is very reminiscent of early 90s hip hop videos, Tyler who directed the video under his alias Wolf Haley, does a fantastic job of story telling in that classic hip hop video style, especially the very end, which conjures images of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video.  Check it out below, but I got mad respect for a guy producing, rapping, directing, and putting shit out the way he's done. MuchLove.

Outside The States.

Hei hei, everyone. As some of you may know I'll be here in Europe this summer, mainly in Norway but also Italy, England, and a handful of other European countries. So I've made it my duty to bring you the best in Music, News, Fashion, and any other cool things I may come across.

I've just gotten back from Oslo and it was a great change of pace, check out the Opera House. Other than general site seeing I didn't get a chance to find anything worth blogging about because I was only there for a short time but I did find THIS . The Green Seed

I'm a bit late on this but upcoming events sparked my memory, I'm talking about The Green Seed, Birmingham,AL based rap group consisting of R-tist, Complet, and DJ FX. They have an upcoming show at Zydeco with Raekwon "The Chef" June 3rd, Details. I had the privilege of seeing them at Eclipse here in Montevallo and it was a pretty sick show, I talked to them afterward and they're probably the most level headed people in Hip Hop. Never left, but I got lazy you know.

Lars Vaular released his latest single just shy of a month ago, hopefully hinting towards an upcoming album but nothing has been released yet, called Fett, which means "cool" in Norwegian. The song samples a 1997 song called "Det eneste Jeg Vil Er Å Ha Det Fett" by DJ Erik, you can check it out here . A bit different than Lars previous work, but still in the Electro/Hip Hop vein that we saw a lot of on Helt om Natten, Helt om Dagen. Enjoy, it's good party music and I'll be adding it to my DJ set.
